Staying Calm Strategies – These self-calming strategies can help you take a moment to regroup before you respond to your child’s Big Worries/Fears behaviour in a challenging situation.
Take a look at the list below and try to identify a few strategies that appeal to you or think about other strategies that you would like to try.
1. Take a few slow, nourishing breaths.
2. Think of a recent memory of your child and you connecting that brings you comfort.
3. Remind yourself that you have the strength to get through this.
4. Focus on your senses (what you can see, feel, hear, smell, and taste) to help you stay present in the moment.
5. Use a stress ball or other calming object or activity.
6. Listen to a favourite song (or even create your own calming playlist).
7. Go for a short walk if someone is there for your child (always reassuring your child you just need a few minutes).
8. Go outside and listen to the sounds of nature (e.g., birds, animals, the wind, the ocean, etc.).
9. Enjoy a moment in your yard, garden, or a special place that nourishes you.
